VAGABOND post class 2/2

In Wednesday’s class, Dr. Rog did a very thorough presentation in covering the materials we recently read through Charles Jencks’ article especially how a lot of visual examples are incorporated in his power point presentation.

I thought postmodernism architecture was interesting especially after looking at the evolution from the Classical era. It was interesting to see how "fashion" keeps coming into play (the notion of replay) and how each period of time is a revision of the past. I particularly enjoyed how each transition was obvious and related to one another so it was less traumatic and confusing.

My favorite architectures are the absent centers - buildings without centers. I am definitely most fascinated by them because of the extra precautions needed to hold the building up. It's interesting because I think about atom molecules and how it is very space-y and most of the atom's composition is the core. In my opinion, I think it is a revolution by removing what is traditionally considered as the most important part.

Traveling a lot, I definitely salute Western Europe with their architecture but Asia has definitely expanded because it has more room for growth. It is to my dismay that it has constantly been neglected in the social/economic scene but from visiting Shanghai on a regular basis for a while, sky scrapers sprout out from the ground every 3 years or so. Because the labor is so cheap, it is ridiculous how efficient every project is completed.

I did not think I would enjoy architecture this much but I cannot deny my fascination with Frank Lloyd Wright and Rem Koolhaas' creativity.
