Post Class, Alison, 2/2
Dr. Casey made understanding the complex terms of Jencks canons simpler. When originally reading Jencks I had a very hard time understanding what the terms really meant. The pictures of the architecture really helped to explain the real meaning of each term. The power point aided his presentation tremendously, giving an example of each term. I had a few wrong definitions just from reading Jencks by myself, but with the collaboration of the class and Dr. Casey I now understand Jencks cannons. I really never knew about the different types of architecture until he showed us. I was really intrigued by both Frank Lloyd Wright and Rem Koolhaas. Wright uses the elements of nature and organics in architecture where Koolhaas uses unique shapes and spaces. I was most fascinated by the Kub apartments. They seem so modern and out there. The idea of an apartment like that would never even cross my mind. I have to say since Dr. Casey’s lecture I have been looking at buildings differently. Wrights buildings are very unique in that they use organics and the surrounds in the building. One of his most famous houses, falling water, actually looks like part of the waterfall in the surroundings. It is very modern in that he uses a lot of concrete and glass. This also gives it the look of rocks and water, blending in with the waterfall. I have found a new appreciation for architecture, and understand the different styles and where they came from.
