Andrew Wells, Intertextuality
Definition of Intertextuality: (noun) relationship between texts: the relationship that exists between different texts, especially literary texts, or the reference in one text to others. After looking back on my notes i found my self questioning what it exactly was and how it has an effect on our society today. The theoretical concept of intertextuality is associated with post-modernism. In addition intertextuality cane be referred into two axes: horizontal axis and vertical axis. Horizontal axis is the connection of the author and the reader of a text. The Vertical axis is in which there is a connection of text and other texts. Rather than studying the premisses of the subject we must study how the structure came about. Intertextuality is found in the process of interacting with people. It is socially constructed as people talk and react to each other. A perfect example is a classroom environment. A professor may propose and intertextual connection between the work that the class is working on with something that is going on outside the class room like current events or current media. The intertextual connection is not met until the students themselves see that there is a connection.
